Top 10 Films Released in August
Our top 10 films released or premiered in the month of August.
![]() No.10. Bande a part (5.8.1964)Not my favourite Jean-Luc Goddard movie, but as most of his films are, it's still a great film. It has had a great influence on cinema too, in fact Quentin Tarantino's production company (A Band Apart) is a homage to this French New Wave film, and his dancing scene in Pulp Fiction was influenced by the scene above. | ![]() No.9. Bonnie and Clyde (13.8.1967)A classic film and one of the best biopics out there. With Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, the film couldn't have been better cast. The film also had a huge influence on cinema, some saying that it was the beginning of a new era in Hollywood cinema. |

![]() No.8. An American Werewolf in LondonReleased on 21st August, 1981, the film was one of the scariest things I watched as a kid and still makes me shudder even thinking about it. The make-up and special effects are some of the best I have seen of its era. A must for any Halloween film night! | ![]() No.7. Dead Man's Shoes (20.8.04)One of my favourite films of the past decade and is as chilling as any other I've seen. Shane Meadows directs this touching and sinister movie, and with Paddy Considine in the lead role, the film is definitely worth a watch. |
![]() No.6 Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking BarrelsReleased on 28th August, 1998, Guy Ritchie's feature film debut as director is one of British cinemas successes. Ritchie's slick style and use of comedy allows for a engaging film. Very English and very good, as is the soundtrack! | ![]() No. 5. The Full Monty (13.8.1997)Another British cinema classic and a film that summed up that period in British history. Although the film has a twee storyline, it deals with a very real issue. All in all an easy and enjoyable watch, a must for any anglophile. |
![]() No.4 The 40-Year-Old Virgin 19.8.05One of the funniest films of the last 10 years in my opinion. Judd Apatow's debut film as a director and the beginning of a run of successful comedy films directed, produced and influenced by him. This film was part of the resurgence of the new comedy film era. | ![]() No.3. Dirty Dancing (21.8.1987)This could be a controversial position for such a film, but there's no denying its longevity in the hearts of film watchers. Often shown as part of festivals or one-off presentations, the film draws the crowds and has many cultural references, you might deny it, but it still comes back! |
![]() No.2. The Usual Suspects (16.8.1995)Released in the US on 16th August, 1995, The Usual Suspects goes down as one of the best endings in cinema history. A great cast and an even better screenplay leads to one of the best films of the 90s! | ![]() No.1. Rear Window (1.8.1954)This was my first choice without a hint of hesitation. A masterpiece by Hitchcock and great performances by James Stewart and Grace Kelly. It has everything that a Hollywood film desires; suspense, storyline, great acting, great directing and superb dialogue. An outstanding film in my eyes. |
